Using the Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2, B650D4U Micro-ATX, or B650D4U-2L2T/BCM motherboard for a Home Lab build?

I am seeing these ASRock "rack server" type motherboards that feature some really great specs for AMD Ryzen AM5 CPUs. I had a user that recommended the Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2 motherboard for a home lab build

Below is the Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2 motherboard. Looks to have nice specs, including multiple PCI-e slots and standard size memory modules instead of SODIMMs. Specs include:

  • Supports AMD Socket AM5 Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
  • 8+2+1 Power Phase, Dr.MOS
  • Supports DDR5 6400+ MHz (OC)
  • 2 PCIe 4.0 x16, 1 PCIe 4.0 x1, 1 M.2 Key E for WiFi
  • Integrated AMD RDNA 2 Graphics
  • Does not include RGB connector
  • CPU Socket: Socket AM5

Reviews look decent.

There is also the B650D4U-2L2T/BCM board that is supposed to be a server type motherboard, also including IPMI functionality. But the reviews on Amazon look to be terrible.

  • Micro-ATX (9.6"x 9.6")
  • Support AMD Ryzen 7000 series Processors
  • 4 DIMM slots (2DPC), supports DDR5 ECC/non-ECC UDIMM
  • 1 PCIe5.0 x16, 1 PCIe5.0 x4, 1 PCIe4.0 x1
  • Supports 1 M.2 (PCIe5.0 x4)

Curious if anyone out there has used ASRock motherboards for server or other builds and thoughts/opinions? @malcolm-r @t3hbeowulf you guys used similar?

@lucassr-job have you seen or tired any of these? Curious if you have looked at any of these models in addition to the Erying.

@brandon-lee Hello my friend, I saw this B650M-HDV/M.2 but didn't consider it because it has 2 RAM slots, I only saw the other one on the Asrock website but I didn't see any prices or reviews for it, today I'm going to order the Erying 13900HX with 4 DDR5 slots up to 6400MHz and I'm also going to order 2x48GB DDR5 and wait for it to arrive to see how it will do with Proxmox.

@lucassr-job Gotcha, looks like a very interesting board. Are you receiving and building soon? Definitely keep us updated here on how it goes with this board. This latest build I have done for Proxmox has renewed my interest in building again. Was definitely a very fun project. I just added Intel Optane for caching and is working beautifully!

i've looked at these and other similar offerings, but the price was never worth it to me for homelab.

@malcolm-r I have a couple more Minisforum boards coming, so stay tuned on those. Really loving the performance and feel of the recent server build. Has me stoked on building a cluster.

@malcolm-r Hey what are you using to connect to your storage? Is it direct attached SAS?

@brandon-lee Sorry for the delay, but living in Brazil is not easy.
After a lot of paperwork, I managed to import my stuff from China to the US and from the US to Brazil... I paid horrible taxes in Brazil, but it was still worth it.
I'm happy that the 64 sodimm memories are finally out, but I thought they would take longer and went with the interpose kit as I mentioned before.
Now I have:
1x - 13900hx DDR5 4 Slots RAM
4x - G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 Series 96GB (2 x 48GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 5200
1x Thermalright AXP 120 Cooler
1x 750W PSU

The case still needs to arrive because of the Carnival holidays.
So I connected everything on top of the box hahaha
The memories work at 4800mhz without xmp enabled, but as I had already seen on reddit it is causing instability and I will have to find manual times and voltages to stabilize, I have already installed proxmox and it recognizes the 192gb.

@lucassr-job Man this looks like a nice setup, especially with the 192 GB of RAM for home lab is a great win. Keep us posted on how you make out on stabilizing the memory on the timings. When are you expecting the case in?

@lucassr-job Also, I powered up the BD795i SE today, basically same setup as I had with the BD795M, looking good so far!
