Commvault Clumio Backtrack: Roll Back Amazon S3 Files Quickly

Learn about Commvault Clumio Backtrack, a new solution that can help businesses recover from ransomware attacks and data loss in Amazon S3

There is no doubt that most are familiar with the threat of ransomware these days. It seems like we hear stories on the news every week of another major ransomware attack. With ransomware so threatening these days and more organizations than ever moving to the cloud, businesses need a way to protect their cloud storage at scale. Commvault has announced Clumio Backtrack which is designed to provide a near instant recovery time of extremely large data sets in Amazon S3. Let’s talk more about this new solution and what it can do.

Challenges of cloud data roll back

There is one thing that is for sure in technology these days – organizations are moving to the cloud in a large way. They now trust cloud storage for ultra-critical data sets and even sensitive data. The Amazon S3 cloud storage solution is one of the leading cloud storage options and holds exabytes and exabytes of data for the worlds businesses.

Amazon S3 has its own capabilities to roll back files to different versions, but this does not scale very well as there is no real intelligent way to roll back millions or even billions of objects back to a specific point in time in an easy way.

Clumio Backtrack

This is where the new Clumio Backtrack solution comes into play. It uses the built-in Amazon S3 versioning that is already available to roll back to a specific point in time. You can recover an entire bucket or individual objects back to a specific point in time.

Clumio Backtrack is built on top of a serverless architecture that allows organizations to scale and meet challenges that come with rolling back massive datasets into the billions of objects. This helps to make sure recovery is possible in the least amount of time needed.

Features

Note the following high-level features of the solution:

  1. Serverless Architecture – It uses serverless technologies which allows it to scale as needed
  2. Integration with Amazon S3 Versioning – The solution builds on native S3 capabilities, so it is not a rip and replace but leverages the underlying technologies found in Amazon S3.
  3. Granular Recovery – You can choose to recover individual objects or entire buckets which makes the solution able to fit individual needs and use cases
  4. Ease of Use – It leverages automation for the recovery operations which allows IT and security teams to focus on other priorities

Availability

Early access to Clumio Backtrack will begin in December 2024. The general availability of the solution is scheduled for early in 2025. You can see the solution in action at AWS re:Invent 2024, where Commvault will showcase live demonstrations and discuss its potential to transform resilience strategies.

How does Clumio Backtrack help?

As we have already mentioned, ransomware is rampant and the stakes are higher than ever for businesses. The reality is that most organizations can’t stand any downtime for their customers or stakeholders. Ransomware can take critical data offline for days, or even weeks.

Ransomware is not the only danger. Human error is another danger to critical data. A user can accidentally delete large amounts of data without knowing. A DevOps engineer could accidentally run a script that targets the wrong data and wipes out massive data sets.

Clumio Backtrack provides the following features that can help with these scenarios:

  • Point-in-time recovery: You can recover to the last known good state of your data with minimal loss and quick recovery
  • Scalability: According to Commvault, it can handle in the billions of objects in Amazon S3
  • Speed: The recovery time is near instant and it reduces downtime which helps with business continuity. Commvault mentions that Clumio Backtrack can recover data in seconds, even in large data loss or corruption scenarios

The AI boom will lead to even larger datasets in cloud storage

AI technologies have exploded over the past couple of years. This explosion in AI technologies means exponential grown of data sets to support artificial intelligence and machien learning. Current estimates by analysts say that cloud AI markets will exceed $647 billion by 2030. This major growth will fuel massive storage needs in cloud storage technologies like Amazon S3.

Woon Jung, CTO โ€“ Cloud Native at Commvault, highlights this need:
“Businesses need fast, scalable, and secure data recovery solutions for the cloud-first world. Weโ€™re thrilled to offer a level of granularity and point-in-time options for object recovery that spans billions of objects and can help customers drive even greater benefits from their cloud investments.”

Ransomware and Data Protection

Ransomware attacks are one of the most common and dangerous threats to businesses today. Cybercriminals often target cloud environments due to the valuable data that businesses are now storing there. Data can also be exfiltrated. This can leave businesses vulnerable to extortion. The Clumio Backtrack solution helps to protect data by enabling businesses to have rapid data recovery. The quicker data can be recovered, the less likely ransomware and exfiltration attacks are effective.

Also, regulatory compliance requires data protection measures are in place. Data recovery tools like Backtrack can help businesses meet their compliance requirements and avoid possible fines and damage to their reputation.

Other Commvault tools

Commvault has been strengthening their portfolio of solutions that are targeting increasing security in the cloud. Over the past year or so, Commvault has introduced solutions like Cloud Rewindโ„ข, Air Gap Protect, and Cleanroomโ„ข Recovery. Each of these solutions are designed to handle specific challenges in hybrid cloud environments.

Raphael Meyerowitz, Partner Go to Market VP at Presidio, highlights how the recent announcement of Backtrack will help:
“Commvaultโ€™s new Clumio Backtrack empowers enterprises to safeguard their critical data with rapid recovery capabilities for complex, large-scale challenges.”

Wrapping up

Commvaultโ€™s Clumio Backtrack is a timely innovation that addresses a critical gap in cloud data recovery. By combining scalability, speed, and ease of use, it offers a robust solution for businesses navigating the challenges of the modern cloud landscape. Whether combating ransomware, correcting human errors, or safeguarding AI-driven workloads, Clumio Backtrack provides the tools enterprises need to stay resilient in the face of adversity.
