  1. Well, I think this is not the right moment to compare both solutions…
    Unraid is just launching the new versiom (6.12) that includes also ZFS.
    I think a comparision between TrueNAS and Unraid (version 6.12) will make more sense.

    1. You can also have multiple parity drives in an unRAID array today. The author mentions that zfs uses raid that is quite correct. Zfs is a volume manager and file system. The parity for zfs uses the name RAIDZx but it is not true RAID but I get the point.

      So perhaps author can update in a few days when zfs is a supported lvm in unRAID.

      Not sure having the os on a stick is confining servers like esxi run on a stick also that is not super crazy but the upside in unRAID is 100% of the disks can be used.

    1. Yes, that’s true. And even cache pools can have 2 drives in the same pool working as RAID 1 (Mirroring).

        1. What I would like to see is the support for more than 1 array. Maybe in the neaar future…
          An example for this usage is my setup. I have 5 x 4TB HDD and 5 8TB HDD that I would like to be in separate arrays to avoid performance issues – The 8TB HDD are much faster than my 4TB HDD and if I mix them, the speed is defined by the slower drive…

  2. If you have a storage system usually is for security: for enterprise the choice is only one trueNAS.
    For a home lab if you don’t care about your data unRAID can be good choice.

    1. Disagree. Both offer protection. You can have two parity drives on UnRAID which will allow you to recover from a failure of two simultaneous drives. You can also mirror (or ZFS for a full RAID) your cache drives as well. The difference would be in use-case. Do you need full RAID (and the hardware requirements that go with it for ZFS) or do you just need to archive files without the need for striping?

  3. I would love to read this extensive article but it makes it hard. You immediately got it wrong with unraid, which does let you use multiple parity drives, even in the cache pool.
