NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10.9 Beta New Features
The new edition of NAKIVO introduces new features designed to increase resilience, streamline recovery, and support the latest platforms. Let’s delve into the NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10.9 Beta new features.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta New Features
This latest version brings several noteworthy additions to the table, including the following:
The new features and enhancements include:
- Bare-Metal Recovery: Allows the restoration of entire physical machines from backups to the same or other identical hardware. This feature tries to minimize the disruption in the event of system failure or malware infection.
- Backup Malware Scan: This feature scans backup data for malware or ransomware infections. It integrates with Microsoft Windows Defender, ESET NOD32 Smart Security, and Sophos Endpoint Protection.
- Direct Recovery from Tape: Enables the recovery of full virtual machines and EC2 instances directly to your infrastructure from backups stored on tape media. This feature supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Amazon EC2, and physical-to-virtual (P2V) Recovery.
- New Supported Platforms: The v10.9 Beta version now supports vSphere 8.0 Update 1 and Debian operating systems.
- Feature Enhancements: The new version includes enhancements like Direct Connect for secure single port connection, Backup of In-Place Archive and Litigation Hold Mailboxes, PST Recovery for Exchange Server, and External Database for Multi-Tenant Deployments.
Bare-Metal Recovery
You can now restore your entire physical machines quickly and easily to the same or different hardware as you need it to. You don’t need to reinstall the operating system and then your apps and the data to go along with it. This feature will be a welcome change for those still needing to back up physical servers.
Backup Malware Scan
Cybersecurity insurance has become increasingly crucial for businesses in today’s digital age. One key requirement of many modern cybersecurity insurance policies is the ability to scan data protection solutions for malware.
The new Backup Malware Scan feature in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta will help address this compliance requirement and also help to add the extra layer of security and making it a more appealing choice for organizations looking to meet stringent cybersecurity insurance conditions.
Direct Recovery from Tape
This functionality bypasses the need for a staging repository, accelerating the recovery process. It supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, and Amazon EC2 platforms, allowing for physical-to-virtual (P2V) Recovery.
vSphere 8.0 Update 1 and Debian support
It now supports VMware vSphere 8.0 Update 1 in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta. This will enable businesses to take advantage of the improved features in vSphere 8.0 Update 1 without having issues with their backups.
Also it expands support for new Debian operating systems, including incremental backups of physical machines running Debian 10.1 up to Debian 11.5.
Feature Enhancements
The Direct Connect feature now supports physical machines, Site Recovery, VMware Free ESXi hosts, and NAS-based Transporters. Moreover, backup of In-Place Archive and Litigation Hold Mailboxes, PST Recovery for Exchange Server, and an external database for Multi-Tenant Deployments also see significant improvements, ensuring seamless performance at any scale.
Deploying NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta
One of the features of NAKIVO Backup & Replication in general is the ease of which you can get up and running with the solution. The NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta release is no exception. NAKIVO gives you multiple options to deploy the v10.9 Beta release:
- Windows Installer
- Linux Installer
- VMware Virtual Appliance
- Nutanix AHV Virtual Appliance
- Installer for NAS
Below, I have downloaded the VMware Virtual Appliance, which is easily imported using the normal OVA/OVF deployment wizard.
After deploying the appliance, you can launch the console connection and configure the network configuration. It defaults to DHCP configuration, but you can set a static IP as I have done here.
You will then browse to the IP or FQDN of your NAKIVO appliance using the IP/hostname port combination:
https://<ip or hostname>:4443
Add your initial inventory (virtual environment), transporter nodes (built into the appliance), and repository (also built into the appliance.
Wrapping up
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a data protection solution that I have been using the home lab for quite some time now. It has been rock solid and has kept up with my constantly-growing home lab virtualization footprint. I really like the Beta program that NAKIVO supports which allows you to try out the new upcoming features for free and score free Amazon gift cards.
